It was like going in some kind of time machine and arriving back in 1920’s or 30’s when we visited Napier, a coastal town midway along the east coast of the northern island.
Back in 1931 the town was devasted by an earthquake and as some way of ensuring that the past was not lost, Napier was rebuilt and re-created in a truly Art Deco format. Although the usual, but unusually out of place Indian restaurant does not blend in with any of the facade here, you feel for moments trapped in another bygone era.
If you are a fan of Art Deco period and all its glorious fashion, ceramics, paintings et al then this is a great place for a short break. Just remember to check the date when you leave, case you are trapped in this moment in time.
