I do not know how many temples we will see on our travels, I have lost count with the multitude we have seen across India, China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand. The design styles are pretty similar, not identical but similar, whether these are designed for worshipping Buddha, one of the three million Hindu Gods or other spiritual embodiments, I can honestly say that I have not come across a temple that is quite like The White Temple in Chiang Rai.
Glitzy, shining like it belongs on a Las Vegas boulevard……its just quite stunning and not at all tacky or distasteful. Inside the temple itself the murals are a curious mix with Michael Jackson and Superman somehow included in a story with some evil devil breathing fire from hell.
Wat Rong Khun, is its official name and in its current form was renovated from a near ruin state by an artist in the nineties. The exhibition of his works is quite amazing and well dare I say it, confident. Well there is a canvas with George Bush and Saddam Hussain sat behind him riding on a nuclear missile in outer space.
Unbelievable – really stunning
